FTTH Lauds FCC Commissioner

WASHINGTON -- The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council today lauded Commissioner Kevin J. Martin of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for his endorsement to deregulate new FTTH builds. Martin's support for the concept came as part of his keynote address to the audience of the Practicing Law Institute (PLI)/FCBA's 20th Annual Telecommunications Policy and Regulation Conference last week in Washington, D.C.

In his remarks, Commissioner Martin stated the FCC should remove FTTH deployments from current "unbundling" rules, which require incumbent telephone companies to share their networks with competitors at regulated prices. Commissioner Martin believes, as does the FTTH Council, that such deregulation will result in an acceleration of American FTTH network deployments and investment.

"The Fiber-to-the-Home Council is pleased that Commissioner Martin has so clearly identified the obstacles that lie in the path of widespread FTTH deployment and global broadband competitiveness," said FTTH Council President James Salter. "Commissioner Martin's remarks show his extensive consideration of the challenges facing FTTH and strong insight into reasonable solutions to those challenges."
