AT&T said Thursday that it has added seven more LTE towns and cities to its growing list. That makes its total 11 for the week and 116 in all.
The new markets are: Reno, Nev.; Richmond, Va; Allentown-Bethlehem, Pa; Hattiesburg and Starkville, Miss.; Moscow, Idaho; and Pullman, Wash.
Why this mattersVerizon Wireless is still easily the bigger player in the U.S. LTE game, with 441 markets. AT&T, however, is now spanking Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) for second place, with more than double the LTE available. Dan Hesse and crew currently have 43 LTE markets up and running.
Redding. I think it was Verizon that made an announcement about LTE in Redding ... at a time when LTE wasn't reaching my Silicon Valley neighborhood yet...
(If you said "Where's Redding?", you're correct.)
To Dan's point -- yes, it sure is amazing how AT&T found the resources to do all this without T-Mobile.
I know the drumbeat of these city/market announcements may seem tedious, but it's definitely a constant reminder that 4G is taking over the world. The nice thing about this is we're seeing smaller markets and smaller cities -- we need that help in the rural areas for sure.
