Sony Builds Up Its 'Sonyness'

No longer encumbered by the Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) side of the equation, Sony Mobile is all about regaining its "Sonyness" by more tightly integrating with its parent company, CE giant Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE). (See Euronews: Sony Buys Ericsson Out of Handsets.)

So-called Sonyness is what the new, standalone company is all about, according to Stephen Sneeden, Sony Mobile's Xperia marketing manager. Light Reading Mobile caught up with Sneeden at Mobile World Congress, where he explained what it means to build Sony-branded and Sony-approved phones.

Sneeden says it will leverage Sony's PlayStation and camera groups, in particular. But, around the 2:30 mark in the following video, he dodges a question about the ultimate form of Sony convergence, the oft-rumored gamers' dream, a PlayStation Vita phone.

This interview made me recall a comment someone made when Apple first introduced the iPad. To paraphrase, if Sony had the old Sonyness, it would have been Sony bringing out the iPad.
