Great point. I think that's partly what is driving this services revolution among telecom equipment vendors. Managed services and consulting contracts are harder to commoditize.

How much extra is BT willing to pay a vendor for interoperability?

I think the carriers misunderstand the issues involved entirely in scale.  Take a look at the profits of the carriers, then look at the profits of the equipment vendors, then take a look at the tech suppliers (like chip makers) and ask....

Does this value chain make viable businesses up and down the chain?  If not, then why would ANYONE decide to participate in a chain the way the guy who is profiting at the max from it wants them to?
