AlcaLu Lands LTE Gig

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) has stuck another LTE feather in its cap, landing an exclusive gig to provide French carrier Bouygues Telecom with the network elements and services it needs to conduct trials in early 2010. (See Bouygues Trials LTE With AlcaLu.)

AlcaLu is supplying base stations (eNodeBs), evolved packet core (EPC) capabilities, management software, and associated professional services to Bouygues, which has more than 10 million mobile customers, more than 76 percent of which are contract (post-paid) customers.

AlcaLu says it's now engaged in 19 LTE trials, but told Unstrung recently it has more lined up for the first quarter of 2010. (See AlcaLu Joins China Mobile LTE Trial and AlcaLu Looking to Strike LTE Gold .)

Like its main rivals, Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC), Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , and Nokia Siemens Networks , Alcatel-Lucent is keen to be seen as a trailblazer in the LTE world, as all the systems suppliers believe that developing "thought leadership" in next-generation mobile will be vital to picking up new business in 2010 and beyond.
