Ethernet Awards Finalists Highlight BackhaulOctober 30, 2009 | Craig Matsumoto

no ratings Mobile backhaul has become a major obsession for the makers of Ethernet access gear, so it's only natural that backhaul is all over the Access category of Light Reading's Ethernet Expo Carrier Ethernet Awards. Larger vendors dominate three of the four categories, but smaller players make up all of the finalists in the Best Carrier Ethernet Access Solution category, which considers new carrier Ethernet access platform (CEAP) systems. The winners are set to be announced on November 3 in New York, at the end of Day 1 of Light Reading's Ethernet Expo Americas 2009. One CEAP entry hasn't even been launched: the ANDA Networks Inc. EtherEdge 4300, described as a mobile backhaul access platform. (Note that it's Heavy Reading, our analyst division, that picks the finalists, so they've obviously gotten advance briefing on the box.) RAD Data Communications Ltd. is likewise targeting backhaul with its ETX-204A Ethernet SLA Demarcation Device, another access-network box. (See RAD Shows SyncToP at Supercomm.) The third new-equipment finalist is Hatteras Networks Inc. , with the HN6100 Multiservice Platform introduced at Supercomm last week. It's Hatteras's first modular system, targeting a variety of applications including mobile backhaul, as well as PWE3-plus, a proprietary scheme for adding a clock signal to Ethernet. (See Hatteras Intros HN6100 and Ethernet News: The Urge to Converge.) The other awards are tailored toward gear that's already been shipping, categorized as Best Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Infrastructure Solution or Best Packet-Optical Infrastructure Solution. The finalists here are Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) (in each category), Extreme Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR), Fujitsu Network Communications Inc. , Juniper Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), and Tellabs Inc. (Nasdaq: TLAB; Frankfurt: BTLA). There's also a Best Marketing award, finalists for which are Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq: CIEN), and Hatteras. You can see the full list of finalists here. — Craig Matsumoto, West Coast Editor, Light Reading Interested in learning more on this topic?
