A method of cleaning up a signal on the receiving end, thus improving Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). For a given set of bits, MLSD picks the most likely fit out of every possible combination of zeroes and ones.
MLSD is commonly used in cellphones and hard disk drives, but it's been less common in high-speed environments such as optical networking, partly due to cost and power concerns.
