Early voting in this year's Leading Lights "Person of the Year" reader survey voting has put Andy Rubin, senior executive director of mobile platforms at Google (Nasdaq: GOOG ), ahead of the pack, but it's a slender lead that could easily be overturned.
Light Reading revealed its Leading Lights annual awards shortlists last Friday and is allowing readers to vote for their favorites in each of the eight categories in a special Leading Lights Reader Survey . (See The 2008 Leading Lights Finalists and 2008 Leading Lights: Who Should Win? )
So far, Rubin has attracted a very healthy 27 percent of the votes in the category, reflecting the interest Google has attracted with the launch of its Android mobile device operating system. (See G1 Is Just the Start for Android , Slideshow: Switching On Android , and Android on WiMax in 2009? )
But with four full days of voting remaining (the reader poll closes this Friday, October 10, at noon Eastern) Rubin -- the man behind Google's Android open-source cellphone operating system -- can still be easily overtaken. Currently in a strong second place is Reliance Communications Ltd. chairman Anil D. Ambani, with 19 percent of the votes, while Nokia Siemens Networks CEO Simon Beresford-Wylie is in third position with 15 percent.
Ben Verwaayen, the new CEO of Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU ), is currently trailing the leading three by quite some way, but there's still time for Big Ben's supporters at AlcaLu, and at his previous employer BT Group plc (NYSE: BT ; London: BTA), to mobilize and register their support. Looks like Nokia voters got their act in gear overnight (California time). Nokia and NSN have overtaken Cisco in Best Investment and Best Marketing, respectively, and Simon Beresford-Wylie is now edging out Andy Rubin for person of the year.
