no ratings COMPANY: Dimdim Inc. MARKET SEGMENT: Software services LOCATION: Boston and Hyderabad, India HEADCOUNT: 28 FORMED: 2006 FINANCING: Raised $2.9 million in funding from Draper Richards LP , Index Ventures , and Nexus India Capital . WHAT IT DOES: Dimdim is a free Web conferencing service that lets users communicate through means such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and document sharing. The company says it has two key differentiating features from other Web conferencing services: It's free, and it's open-source. Dimdim's service is Web-based and requires no software download, yet is highly customizable due to its open-source nature. The service is ad supported, but Dimdim also has a for-pay enterprise version, which requires a software download but has more features than the free version. The company says the paid version is still significantly inexpensive – approximately 70 percent less than WebEx Communications , a competing service owned by Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO). CUSTOMERS: None named yet. Dimdim says it will announce some paid enterprise customers in a couple of weeks with the product's official launch. PARTNERSHIPS: Dimdim says it has a few key partnerships that it will announce with the official launch. COMPETITORS: WebEx and GoToMeting, owned by Citrix Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CTXS).
MANAGEMENT: WHAT TO WATCH: The service is expected to launch the third week of September in the U.S. and U.K., with India to launch shortly after. Dimdim wants to change the landscape the way Hotmail did for email or Skype Ltd. for telephone calls. But, while Skype doesn't claim to be a replacement for your primary phone service, Dimdim says it absolutely aims to become the primary way people Web conference. — Raymond McConville, Reporter, Light Reading
