FiOS Tracker

11:15 AM -- FiOS Tracker was stalking Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) yesterday at its MDU Summit in Lower Manhattan. The day's topic: convincing apartment complex owners to bring fiber into their hoods. FiOS tracker came away with a few interesting tidbits:

  • Verizon says four out of five FiOS users claim that they would recommend the service to a friend. We've since learned those same FiOS users would also recommend Trident.

  • Verizon claims its churn rate for FiOS is less than 1 percent, or 30 percent less than its closest competitor. Of course, the service is less than one year old in most areas, and everyone who signs up is locked into a service agreement and/or a basement, so that might have something to do with it.

  • Verizon makes a bold claim that people are starting to factor in the availability of FiOS in a given neighborhood when making a decision on where to move. But does it make getting to Keller, Texas, via I-35 any less of a headache?

  • What demographic would you guess is among the biggest drivers of online gaming traffic? If you guessed women between the ages of 30 and 50, you're probably lying, but in any case that's the answer, according to Verizon.

  • And finally, it looks as if Verizon is looking to put its ONT equipment on a diet with smaller versions by the end of this year. This is probably a good thing for Tellabs Inc. (Nasdaq: TLAB; Frankfurt: BTLA), one of Verizon's main ONT suppliers.

That is a bit of a stretch iptv1020. They have said they have a trial of a system in Lewisville in 2q and a second trial in 3q. Assuming that these trials are successful, they can then plan a cutover from BPON to GPON. However, the product is not approved yet. On top of that, the GPON ONTs are not compatible with the existing BPON deployment. So, there must be a number of GPON OLT installs before there is much of a base of GPON ONT installs. On top of that, it is not clear when exactly BPON OLT installs will stop. It is not exactly simple to cut over from one to the other when one is being rolled out in volume and the other is a complete unknown.

It is my understanding that they will be rolling out GPON for future FiOS installs starting in Lewisville using Alcatel GPON ONT on new installs and not using the Telllabs BPON ONT's on anymore installs.

No they are only using the BPON ONT from Tellabs currently but the future roll out of GPON will be Alcatel GPON ONT bypassing the Tellabs GPON ONT.

I think first we would have to see a successful GPON deployment. I recall that Verizon personnel at NFOEC said they were going to attempt to turn up their first system in Q2. So, at the moment there is no GPON product to roll out.

I think the more important question on this issue is, what are VZ's plans for rollout of GPON vs. BPON? Does anyone have a clue?

So you're saying VZ's using Tellabs CO gear and an Alcatel ONT for BPON?

How is this a good thing for Tellabs when Alcatel is now providing the diet ONT product ousting Tellabs going forward.
