Edgecore Networks contributes the design of its new 100G open networking modular switch to the Open Compute Project (OCP).

SAN JOSE -- Edgecore Networks, the leader in open networking, today announced that it will open source through the Open Compute Project (OCP) the hardware design of the industry's first 100G open network modular switch, bringing the proven open technology benefits of choice, rapid innovation, and operator control to higher bandwidth infrastructure deployments in private and public cloud data centers and service provider networks.

The Open Modular Platform (OMP) is architected to support open source and commercial software options, and to integrate emerging network hardware technologies for lower capex, reduced power consumption, simplified cabling and reduced integration costs in high capacity, high bandwidth open networks. Edgecore's initial design contributions of the Open Modular Platform are the OMP 800 system providing 256-ports of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and the OMP 1600 system providing 512-ports of 100 GbE or 2,048-ports of 25 GbE.

Open Hardware and Open Software

The OMP system is based on a folded-Clos internal network design, with independent switching elements on its fabric cards and line cards, an integrated platform management framework, and open source Network Operating System (NOS) options. Edgecore will offer the OMP 800 and OMP 1600 as commercial products as part of its complete product line of open network switches and access points.

The OMP systems support the disaggregated software model, and will support the following open source software:

  • Open Network Install Environment (ONIE), the OCP universal NOS installer;

    • Industry standard APIs and underlying platform code to make available hardware management data from the OMP systems;

    • Open Network Linux (ONL), the OCP reference NOS, with forwarding agents available for OpenFlow™ and open API programming of leading switch silicon;

    • OpenSwitch, the full-function Layer 2 and Layer 3 open source NOS with programmatic interfaces;

    • Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC), a collection of software networking components proposed by Microsoft as a contribution to OCP.

      The OMP line cards provide 32 external QSFP28 ports, with each port capable of running at 100 GbE, 2x50 GbE, 40 GbE, 4x25 GbE, or 4x10 GbE with appropriate breakout cables. Each line card and fabric card is designed with two Broadcom StrataXGS?? Tomahawk™ Switch Series silicon switches and two CPU modules. The OMP design supports the same x86 and PowerPC CPU modules as on the OCP-accepted Edgecore AS7700-32X 100GbE switches, in order facilitate software porting across a family of OCP switches.

      The OMP system has been architected to support the design of additional line cards to integrate emerging network technologies, including for example, higher density 100 GbE switch silicon, high buffer switching for data center interconnect and telecom applications, emerging coherent optical and on-board optical technologies, and network processor and compute options for Virtualized Network Function (VNF) applications. Edgecore's contribution of the Open Modular Platform design to OCP will enable operators, switch vendors, software partners and open source communities to collaborate in addressing new open network use cases with a flexible, modular and high bandwidth switch platform.

      EdgeCore Leadership in Open Networking

      As a sponsor of the OCP Summit in San Jose on March 9-10, Edgecore will be exhibiting the OMP 800 system and introducing the OMP designs in a presentation there on March 10 at 10:30am. Edgecore will be exhibiting its product line of 10GbE, 40GbE and 100GbE OCP-accepted switches, and the following new products and design contributions announced at the Summit.

    • Open Optical Monitoring API demonstration based on Edgecore switch hardware, Cumulus®Linux® NOS, and optical transceivers and cables from Amphenol, Avago, and Finisar;

    • OpenSwitch, the open source NOS, demonstrated for the first time on 100GbE switches-- on the Edgecore AS7712-32X OCP-accepted switch based on Broadcom StrataXGS Tomahawk switch silicon in the Edgecore booth, and on Edgecore AS7512-32X OCP-contributed switch based on Cavium XPliant® switch silicon in the Cavium booth.
