SOUTHAMPTON, UK -- Fibercore, a UK based global market leader in the design and manufacture of specialty optical fiber has developed an advanced capability for the fabrication of Multicore Fibers. Standard, demonstration product has four cores, but the fabrication method is exceptionally versatile, allowing virtually any practical configuration, spacing and number of cores. Multicore is an exciting new technology that is providing a platform for the next generation of telecommunication devices and sensor systems.

In the telecoms sector, Multicore fibers can be used to reduce dramatically the amount of space required and increase the bandwidth of cables used in data centers and exchanges.

Data cables can be reduced in size by having, for instance, eight cores within one fiber. This would replace the existing technology from an eight fiber ribbon to a single fiber cable, dramatically reducing the cross sectional area of a cable. Alternatively, the eight fibers can be replaced by eight Multicore fibers, increasing the cable bandwidth by eight times.

In the biomedical sector, using Fibercore designs with photosensitive cores, Fiber Bragg Gratings may be inscribed into each core providing the ability to use the fiber as a 3D shape sensor.

Multicore fibers come with the option for fiber customization, providing the best possible fiber for applications. Fibercore offer a drilling technology to position the cores, making it possible to place virtually any core in any position within the fiber.
