12:20 PM -- Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (Nasdaq: MRVL) played up the powerline potential it's getting via its acquisition of Design of Systems on Silicon (DS2) 's asserts and intellectual property, but the deal also positions Marvell as a chip player for G.hn, an emerging home networking standard covering coax, powerlines, and phonelines. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, and Marvell execs barely even acknowledged the purchase of the Spanish company's assets during Thursday's earnings call. But Marvell said it does plan to continue selling DS2 products and support its current customers. About 75 DS2 employees are joining Marvell. (DS2 execs told Light Reading Cable in April that it had about 110 employees.)

DS2 is pulling into Marvell's port after weathering some rough seas. The Spain-based firm filed for voluntary Concurso de Acreedores in May, the Spanish equivalent to Chapter 11, so it could reorganize and get a plan underway to deal with its debt load.

DS2 officials told Light Reading Cable in May that it filed in part because orders expected from a "top customer" in 2009 were delayed, but that things appeared to be back on track in 2010.

Despite the setback, DS2, at the time, said it still planned to start shipping samples of G.hn chips by the third quarter of 2010, but allowed that it could be another year before more advanced field trails get underway. There was a "strong potential" for those to start by the second half of 2011, teeing up some competition for other platforms such as Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) and HomePlug Powerline Alliance .
