Juniper's SDN Jumps Into Cloudscaling

Cloudscaling, the cloud infrastructure startup, has embraced Juniper Networks Inc.'s software-defined networking (SDN) platform as part of a new set of partnerships and fundraising announced Wednesday.

That fundraising, for $10 million, was a Series B round with investors including Trinity Ventures, Juniper and Seagate Technology LLC.

Cloudscaling also announced it is going to be using JunosV Contrail, Juniper's SDN controller technology, inside Open Cloud System (OCS), Cloudscaling's cloud infrastructure system.

Why this matters
Cloudscaling has always been focused on the enterprise -- CTO Randy Bias certainly thinks so, anyway -- but clouds based on its products could still provide a good showcase for what JunosV Contrail might do for service providers.

Contrail, the startup that Juniper acquired for SDN, is all about scale. The startup's focus was on building a control plane that could be distributed across very large networks, just as the function of routing is distributed.
