Huawei's R&D Man Quits for EMC

John Roese has left Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. to join EMC Corp. as chief technology officer.

EMC reported the news Tuesday morning. Roese will report to Jeremy Burton, executive vice president of product operations and marketing.

EMC's CTO of the last eight years was Jeff Nick, who's getting what sounds like a promotion. He'll still be a CTO, reporting to Chief Strategist Paul Maritz, the former CEO of VMware Inc.. VMware is owned by EMC, and Maritz recently moved out of the CEO spot to accept responsibilities across the wider EMC landscape.

Why this matters
Roese, stationed in Santa Clara, Calif., was a key figure in Huawei's U.S. efforts, helping to assemble the North American R&D team. He was also helping with Huawei's drive to get into the enterprise market.

On the PR front, Roese was quite visible as part of Huawei's ongoing efforts to cultivate a friendlier image in the United States.

Roese had joined Huawei in November 2010. He's best known to Light Reading readers for his time as CTO of Nortel Networks Ltd. -- ah, memories.
