Recently Open Sourced SDN Network Operating System -- ONOS -- rapidly gains momentum with more than 1,000 software downloads and two new partners in less than two months

MENLO PARK, Calif. -- ON.Lab today announced that ONOS, the open source SDN Network Operating System for service providers and mission critical networks, has achieved two significant milestones in a short period of two months after its successful launch. Following its open source release on Dec. 5, 2014, ONOS has now crossed 1,000 software downloads globally and announced the expansion of its partnership with the addition of new members – Cisco and SK Telecom. Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), the worldwide leader in networking, and SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM), Korea's largest telecommunications company, will join the ONOS community comprised of leading service providers, vendors, collaborators and individual contributors to accelerate SDN adoption and drive open innovation.

ONOS is a carrier-grade SDN network operating system for service provider networks architected to provide high availability, scalability, performance, and rich northbound and southbound abstractions. Cisco and SK Telecom join founding members who are funding and contributing to the ONOS initiative including: AT&T, NTT Communications, Ciena, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, NEC; as well as members who are collaborating and contributing to ONOS including ONF, Infoblox, SRI, Black Duck, Internet2, GARR, CNIT and Create-Net. "The successful launch of ONOS marks an important milestone in the ongoing transformation of the network infrastructure with SDN," said Guru Parulkar, Executive Director of ON.Lab. ONOS was open-sourced and made publicly available for download on Dec. 5, 2014, by ON.Lab, leading service providers, vendors and collaborators. In addition to the number of downloads, ON.Lab saw impressive attendance at its pre- and post-launch events including a total of more than 1000 attendees at its two ONOS webinars and 100+ business leaders from leading service providers and vendors at its partner summit in Palo Alto, Calif.

ONOS has been well received by the developer community as is evident from the fast adoption of the open source release, as well as rapid growth in the community contributions to the ONOS codebase and feature set following this release.

"ONOS brings a fresh perspective to software-defined networking. The ONOS Intent Framework is an innovative architectural approach with compelling features. In particular, I think the SDN-IP feature will become increasingly important as SDN is rolled out in production and the need to interconnect SDN and IP networks comes to the fore," said David Jorm, Product Security Engineer at IIX. "My primary contribution to ONOS has been forming the security response team and developing a security response process. Security is critical to the success and adoption of SDN and I'm hopeful that establishing a strong security process early on will assist in keeping ONOS as secure as possible."

"When I first looked into ONOS source code, I saw 'beauty' in it, with its modular architecture, well-defined clean interface and especially its Intent Framework with high-level abstractions that dramatically simplify the interface. It is like an edifice designed by a great architect and I immediately decided to contribute to the code base. I hope that many applications will be developed on the ONOS foundation," said Kunihiro Ishiguro, CTO and Executive Director at Access Company.

ONOS is an SDN network operating system for service provider networks and mission critical networks. This platform delivers a highly available, scalable SDN control plane featuring northbound and southbound open APIs and paradigms for a diversity of management, control, and service applications. Initially targeted to service providers, ONOS will expand into cloud service providers, enterprises and into mainstream deployments. The addition of new partners, code, and use cases will be a strong driver for the growth of its ecosystem and its continued successful evolution.
