First Year TIPs the Scale Toward Success

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) recently celebrated its first year of service, and both its membership rolls and active projects attest to just how successful that 12-month period has been.

TIP is made up of operators, infrastructure providers, systems integrators and other technology companies that are working to reimagine the traditional approach to building and deploying telecom network infrastructure. One project in particular -- Core Network Optimization -- is chaired by Intel, a Virtuapedia sponsor, and directly impacts many Pedia companies in its quest to deliver options for services and applications in the radio core network by leveraging open cloud architecture to provide a framework for disaggregated cloud-scale computing.

Already, more than 55 members of TIP are also found in Virtuapedia, and several of these have been recognized recently for their work related to core network optimization:

  • Ciena and Reliance Jio (RJio) made a dual announcement in late March that the fast-growing Indian mobile service provider had deployed Ciena's multi-terabit converged packet-optical platforms in its 4G network core to support surges in subscriber numbers and data traffic. (See Ciena Bags Backbone Deal at India's RJio.)

    • Nokia announced in February that it expanded its mobile transport portfolio with a range of "anyhaul" mobile transport options to address requirements of the 5G era, as well as the increased coverage and capacity driven by ultra-broadband, IoT and the cloud. (See Nokia Enhances Its 'Anyhaul' Portfolio.)

    • Also in February, ADVA launched its FSP Network Hypervisor, which was designed to help migrate legacy networks to cloud-optimized infrastructures, including the processes that lead to self-provisioned services, automated resiliency and optimized resource utilization necessary for real-time cloud connectivity and multi-layer network optimization in SDN and NFV-centric network architectures. (See ADVA Intros Optical Network Hypervisor.)

More than 1,600 companies and 1,650 products are now listed in Virtuapedia, making it the telecom industry's most comprehensive resource for all things related to virtualization. Some 14,000 network professionals also are now registered with Virtuapedia, giving them access not only to vendor and product information but also to the latest industry news and research from Heavy Reading.
