BTE 2014: ONF Looks at a Year in Advancing Virtualization

CHICAGO -- Light Reading's Big Telecom Event 2014 -- The ONF and other groups advancing network virtualization will move from defining NFV and SDN requirements to implementing them over the next year or so.

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) helped start Light Reading's first BTE show Monday with an introductory overview of SDN and NFV from Marc Cohn, senior director of market development at Ciena Corp. (NYSE: CIEN). Cohn had his ONF hat on to talk about the evolution of SDN and NFV in the last 18 months. (See ONF, OIF Deep-Dive Into NFV, SDN.)

"NFV is one of the most significant carrier initiatives in recent memory," he said. (See Defining SDN & NFV.)

Cohn mainly focused on how virtualization has "come from nowhere" in the last year and is reshaping how operators, vendors, industry groups, and standards bodies deal with networking, standards, and open source. He did, however, highlight that some new groups and specifications coming for NFV/SDN:

He also expects to see wider carrier interest in deploying NFV and SDN. "A year ago, there was... a lot of hype and a lot of discussion, for sure." Back then, most of the actual work involved data center transports and cloud projects, with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and NTT Communications Corp. (NYSE: NTT) as the technology models.

That has changed. Cohn cited Infonetics Research Inc. findings that many carriers are interested in deploying NFV and SDN in wider contexts.

This will mean industry groups, carriers, and vendors working together on the technology over the next 18 months. "The key right now is moving from specification to implementation."

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech.
