CableLabs Issues RFP for New Residential Gateway
Getting off to a fast start after the long Thanksgiving weekend, CableLabs and several key MSOs issued a joint request-for-proposals (RFP) Monday for a new type of residential gateway. The RFP spells out a common set of product requirements for an integrated cable modem and router/wireless access device based on CableHome 1.1 specifications. The idea is to enable the delivery of value-added services for home networking and high-speed data subscribers, including services that need quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. Among other things, the RFP lists requirements for residential gateways to incorporate discovery, prioritized QoS and Network Address Translation configuration features as defined by the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Forum Steering Committee's UPnP specs. Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications are working on the RFP along with CableLabs. The deadline for vendor responses is Jan. 31.
