EXTON, Pa. -- The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and its global brand, the International Society of Broadband Experts™ (ISBE), are partnering with leading cable system operators, their technology suppliers, and CableLabs to create and deliver industry-first live training for cable engineers and operations professionals that can accelerate deployment of DOCSIS 3.1.

Building on a highly successful debut late last year, the DOCSIS 3.1 Boot Camp is the first advanced training of its kind and targeted for a nationwide rollout in 2016. The training has been developed in close consultation with SCTE/ISBE’s operator and vendor partners, and is designed to accelerate workforce readiness, performance and time-to-market for DOCSIS 3.1 deployments. SCTE/ISBE will make DOCSIS 3.1 Boot Camp information available at the CableLabs Winter Conference Feb. 9-12 in Orlando.

“As we prepare to deploy DOCSIS 3.1, it is essential we also prepare our field engineers and technicians. Partnering with SCTE in the design and creation of the DOCSIS 3.1 Boot Camp unites industry engineering expertise and learning systems that tailor the training with operations in mind. The outcome is a positive learning experience for intermediate and advanced level engineers,” said Peter Negrete, Executive Director XOC/Network Operations for Comcast University.

The three-day SCTE/ISBE program uses the latest education methods and modalities to deliver the training effectively, and includes a combination of primers and pre-course assessment of students’ existing knowledge to ensure their readiness for the classroom portion of the training.

These methods are designed to prepare students for learning the onsite course work. Follow-up course activities, including digital games and additional educational content, serve as refreshers that are intended to reinforce the education that has taken place. Attendees at the debut class at Comcast’s Atlanta facility scored the program at 4.875 out of a possible 5 in feedback questionnaires and universally said they would recommend the course to colleagues. “Two key factors -- our unique collaboration with the innovators, technology providers and end users and our use of ‘Just in Time’ learning techniques – underpin the unparalleled value of our DOCSIS 3.1 curriculum,” said Reni Gorman, vice president, learning and development for SCTE and ISBE. “The course has been engineered to deliver a cadence of practical and applied lessons to maximize the ability of students to leverage the learning in their on-the-job functions, and to accelerate the training of their co-workers in the cable community.”

The Boot Camp contains more than a dozen modules and demonstrations that cover foundational elements of DOCSIS 3.1. Application exercises on deployment, installation and troubleshooting ensure that participants acquire not just conceptual knowledge, but also the ability to immediately apply their skills on the job. The program also includes smartphone educational games that reinforce and solidify knowledge, and e-learning modules for the field. In addition to MSO and SCTE collaboration, the DOCSIS 3.1 Boot Camp curriculum utilizes content sourced from ARRIS, Averna, Rhode & Schwartz, Trilithic and Viavi. Rhode & Schwartz, Trilithic and Viavi provided equipment that was used for in-class demonstrations during the Atlanta debut.
