Charter Communications has become the latest major US cableco to get gig-happy as it revs up its deployments of DOCSIS 3.1 throughout the nation.

Charter Communications Inc. , the second-largest cable and broadband provider in the US, revealed late last week that it will roll out D3.1 across its 50-million-home footprint by year's end. Using that technology, it will offer its new Spectrum Internet Gig service (actually 940 Mbit/s downstream) nationwide by the close of the year, joining such other large cable players as Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), Cox Communications Inc. , Mediacom Communications Corp. , WideOpenWest Holdings LLC (WOW) and Cable One Inc. .

After launching DOCSIS 3.1 in December, Charter has now deployed the technology and its corresponding Spectrum Internet Gig service in eight markets, including, New York City, Austin, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Oahu, Raleigh/Durham and San Antonio. As a result, it now offers 1-Gig service to 9 million homes and businesses in those markets, or nearly 20% of its total footprint. A CSP's digital transformation involves so much more than technology. Crucial – and often most challenging – is the cultural transformation that goes along with it. As Sigma's Chief Technology Officer, Catherine Michel has extensive experience with technology as she leads the company's entire product portfolio and strategy. But she's also no stranger to merging technology and culture, having taken a company — Tribold — from inception to acquisition (by Sigma in 2013), and she continues to advise service providers on how to drive their own transformations. This impressive female leader and vocal advocate for other women in the industry will join Women in Comms for a live radio show to discuss all things digital transformation, including the cultural transformation that goes along with it.
