Shaw Puts 3D-TV Into View

1:45 PM -- Canadian MSO Shaw Communications Inc. is getting ready to give all that 3D TV hype a small dose of reality.

Rather than wait around for the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) to come up with some 3D standards, Shaw said it will start to deliver a range of films, sports programming, and concert events in 3D this summer via a partnership with Corus Entertainment Inc. (See Shaw Teams on 3D-TV Tilt and SCTE Looks at 3DTV .)

Shaw said it will offer fare, such as the Journey to the Center of the Earth IMAX film, in 3D via its video-on-demand platform. It'll be delivered in the anaglyphic process, so customers will need those not-so-fancy "red and blue" 3D glasses to get the experience. Shaw said it will provide those for free to all subs.

"We are convinced that 3D is the next big breakthrough for enhancing the in-home entertainment experience, and we are committed to developing the content and advancing the technology to support this," MSO CEO and vice chair Jim Shaw said, in a statement.
