IPTV Hits Vietnam's Screens

3:20 PM -- State-owned carrier Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corp. has launched commercial IPTV services in Hanoi to compete with broadband rivals VTC Digicom and FPT Telecom as competition heats up in Vietnam's IPTV market.

The telco's subsidiary, Vietnam Software and Communications Company (VASC), is running the IPTV services, which include the linear TV channels, radio, and time-shifting services.

However, it's the on-demand capabilities, such as video-on-demand, music-on-demand, TV-on-demand, games, karaoke, information, and advertising/marketing, on which the company is putting particular emphasis as it attempts to differentiate itself from the country's satellite and cable TV providers.

This is the latest IPTV development for VNPT, which has been investing heavily in its broadband network in order to support video services. It's delivering the video services over ADSL connections and building its services on ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063; Hong Kong: 0763)’s ZXBIV IPTV Eyewill platform, and has deployed Verimatrix Inc. 's security solution to protect content. (See Vietnam Post Picks ZTE, Verimatrix .)

VNPT launched its initial IPTV services in Ha Noi and Hai Phong in June, and has continued its rollout in Ho Chi Minh city, Binh Duong, and Dong Nai.

Competitors FPT and VTC launched in March and May respectively, and all are expecting the market to grow as broadband penetration increases from its current 10 percent level. Check out this Vietnam News report for more.
