Expanding its reach further in Europe, thePlatform has struck a deal to help deliver multiscreen video services for Viaplay, a leading over-the-top (OTT) video service in Scandinavia.

A white-label media publishing company owned by Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), thePlatform Inc. announced Thursday that it will provide backend video management for Viaplay's OTT video service. Viaplay, which is part of the international entertainment broadcaster Modern Times Group, offers both online and set-top-based video services to viewers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland.

The pact calls for mpx, thePlatform's cloud-based video publishing system, to manage Viaplay's TV services for viewing on PCs, tablets, smart TVs, smartphones, Xbox, and PlayStation 3. Likewise, the mpx publishing system will provide support for viewers who use Viaplay's OTT set-tops.

The deal is the latest move by thePlatform, based in Seattle, to extend its reach across the Atlantic. The media publisher has now signed up a number of major European cable companies, telcos, and other service providers, including BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA) and Liberty Global Inc. (Nasdaq: LBTY). In North America, its customer base includes Comcast, Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC), Cox Communications Inc. , Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC), and Rogers Communications Inc. (Toronto: RCI).

In addition, thePlatform, which maintains geographically redundant datacenters in Europe and North America, has been beefing up its sales staff in Europe. Most recently, it added three European sales executives – Jan Bertil Dahms (Germany), Jon Roberts (UK), and Richard Cross (Eastern Europe). All three report to Simon McGrath, the company's European general manger.

So don't be surprised to see thePlatform announce more deals with European service providers in the coming months.

Where next in Europe?
thePlatform seems ready to take Europe by storm. So the question is where will they go next? Will they sign up more OTT providers? Or will they mainly stick with cable cos and telcos? So many questions, so little time.
