OFC/NFOEC 2012: New Product Recap

In this feature, we look back at a selection of new telecom-related products announced during, for or around the 2012 OFC/NFOEC . As usual, our emphasis here is on communications-oriented products and companies.

We organized this list into a few fairly broad categories. Because OFC/NFOEC focuses pretty tightly on optical components and devices, we have tried to reduce the burden on the Components & Devices category by pushing some items into categories closer to their intended area of application. So, for example, devices that operate at the line side of 100G carrier transmission systems will generally be found under Carrier Transport & Optical Networking, whereas those operating internally within a node or equipment will generally be found under Components & Devices. Make sense?

Xilinx Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX)
100Gbit/s optical gearbox
This is billed as the industry's first dual 100Gbit/s gearbox for connecting 100G interfaces with the latest generation of high-density, 100Gbit/s CFP2 optical modules. It incorporates a single 28nm Virtex-7 HT FPGA and Xilinx Gearbox intellectual property (IP) cores, and the company says that the solution overcomes the initial hurdles of leveraging the new CFP2 optics supporting 100GE, OTU4 and 10x 10 MSA specifications. This allows higher-density 100G linecards and transmission equipment while lowering overall system power consumption and cost through integration -- the company cites twice the density and more advanced debugging features compared to competing devices, as well as replacing what would be a three-chip ASSP design.
