ORLANDO -- Cable-Tec Expo -- The big Docsis 3.1 reveal is set to happen here Thursday afternoon as engineers from several cable operators and CableLabs detail the goals and timing of the industry's next-generation IP platform. (See Docsis 3.1 Will Change Cable's Data Channels, Docsis 3.1 to Be Smarter, Faster & Cheaper and Docsis 3.1 to Be Revealed at Cable-Tec Expo.)

We'll have more details on that session soon, but in the meantime, Light Reading Cable has caught up with some of the people tasked with developing those specs and creating the actual equipment.

Jorge Salinger, the VP of access architecture at Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), offered his take on the anticipated goals of Docsis 3.1 and when it will become "real," and discussed how cable intends to migrate to the new platform while continuing to support its broad deployment of Docsis 3.1.

To gain some insight from the vendor side, we also caught up with Mark Palazzo of Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) to ask why the industry is pursuing Docsis 3.1 now, and how the new specs will fit into the company's product roadmap and when. (See Cisco Hints at What Comes After Docsis 3.0.)

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field. As always, we'll also leave plenty of time to answer all your questions live on the air and chat board.
