Chalk up another customer win for Arris in the evolving Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) sweepstakes as vendors continue to jockey for post position.

Austrian cable operator Liwest Kabelmedien GmbH is deploying Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS)'s E6000 converged edge router to support Internet service delivery at speeds of up to 250 Mbit/s. Liwest will use the E6000 in conjunction with the already-deployed Arris TG682 cable modem/gateways and plans to upgrade its Internet speeds to 1 Gbit/s in the future.

The deal with Liwest is only the latest in a series of E6000 customer wins for Arris. According to Arris Chairman & CEO Bob Stanzione, the converged edge router now covers more than 5 million cable subscribers around the world, and that number would be even higher if the vendor hadn't suffered supply chain setbacks in the first quarter. Stanzione said during the company's most recent earnings call that those issues have been addressed, and he expects sales momentum for the E6000 to continue. (See Arris Starts Off Year Strong.)

The E6000 today acts solely as a high-density DOCSIS chassis. However, Arris is scheduled to add in edge QAM capabilities via software updates later this year to turn the router into a full-fledged CCAP device.

On the competitive front, Arris is now the number-one supplier of CCAP and cable modem termination system (CMTS) devices, according to Infonetics Research Inc. . Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), the long-time category leader, has slipped to number two, although the company plans to take its fully integrated cBR-8 CCAP device into lab trials with up to 10 cable customers this summer. Casa Systems Inc. , which is already shipping an integrated CCAP chassis, is another strong contender in the market. CommScope Inc. and Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq: HLIT) are also in the hunt.
