WiFi Is Better Than Chocolate?

If you're a small business owner, you're better off skipping the mints and offering free WiFi instead.

According to a new Comcast Business survey of entrepreneurs and small business IT decision makers, WiFi is a much better tool than free candy, water, community bulletin boards, or magazines when it comes to keeping customers happy. More than 85% of respondents agreed that WiFi trumps all these other perks. (See Comcast Whips Up More WiFi.)

That said, not every business is jumping on the WiFi train. Some -- predominantly those that have been in business 20 years or more -- told Comcast Business that they had concerns over tech support, employee distraction, and costs associated with managing a WiFi network.

For the rest of the pro-WiFi folks, check out the infographic below about the perks of WiFi for small business owners. (Or click here to see a larger version of the image.)

Re: Reality check
I totally agree. But the problem is still with technology: it stands in the way. It should evolve in a way to become rather seamlessly integrated in your daily routine, i.e., you don't have to reach for it. It's just there, completing your actions.

Re: Reality check
Kruz,

Hmm I can't tell you much because part of the experiment was with the objective of writing an article about it and I haven't written it yet. I will let you know when I have it ready.

However, I can tell you what happened today. I believe it's quite illustrative. As I got used to not being a slave of carrying the phone with me as if it were an exygen tank I rarely remember to charge it unless I know I am going to take pictures.

So, early this morning I went for a walk. The phone was not charged, naturally, I was not bothered by it. During the walk, I saw a beautiful family of swans. The little ones were learning how to get their own food. I regretted for a minute that I didn't have the phone with me to take a picture.

The feeling disappered fast. I was enjoying the moment too much to worry about the phone, or a picture that I can see on Google images. I stood there watching their movements for a long, long time. It was a beautiful scene; I enjoyed every second I slowly walked along them as they moved.

If I would have had the phone, I would have taken a picture and continued my walk missing all what I saw in the long time I was there. Then, at home, I would have uploaded the picture, maybe to Facebook, so everyone could see the beautiful family of swans. Then, less than a minute looking at the picture and end of the story.

I would have missed a precious moment that was unique and I really enjoyed. :)

I would do it as an experiment. What have you come to notice from your 1 year detox?

I live in asia and travel internationally mostly, so I pretty much always have to make a hop someplace, I have a few key airports I like to schedual my transits at because I know I will be able to get free wifi, and in most cases it will be fast.

Re: Reality check
Kruz,

It's hard at the beginning, but it gets better when you start feeling the freedom that it brings. :)

You say you would do it if needed. What would be that need that would trigger you to do it? Wouldn't you do it by choice? Okay. Not a year. What about a week? I promise you will learn a lot.

I can never get the free wifi.  In Atlanta, I'm lucky it does anything.  Same for SW Airlines' Dallas Love Field unless I'm in the center of the airport, and then, it's still very slow.  Charlotte seems to have just certain sites and I've never figured out the Kansas City wifi.  It's always faster and easier to use an aircard.

@briandnewby, I am one of the ones guilty of booking flights with transits through airports who have free wifi.

Re : WiFi Is Better Than Chocolate?
I strongly support the fact that WiFi is far much better than all the other after sales services businesses may offer to their customers.  With the rate at which technology is developing, all the businesses should gladly join the WiFi train. They should not really consider the costs that are associated with managing a WiFi network. This is because a majority of people seek out for places with free WiFi. Most passengers prefer busses and flights that have the free WiFi.

Re: Reality check
If I have enough coffee reserves then yes :) On a more serious note, I admit it will be hard, but I would do it if needed. I am without a fb account by choice, and yet am much more connected than anyone else.

Broadband speeds are ramping up across Europe as the continent, at its own pace, follows North America towards a gigabit society. But there are many steps to take on the road to gigabit broadband availability and a number of technology options that can meet the various requirements of Europe’s high-speed fixed broadband network operators. During this radio show we will look at some of the catalysts for broadband network investments and examine the menu of technology options on offer, including vectoring and G.fast for copper plant evolution and the various deployment possibilities for FTTH/B.
