WiC: Come Build Your Brand in Denver

Today, March 1, kicks off Women's History Month, a great time to reflect on the strides women have made towards equality and their significant contributions to society, but also to recognize that we still have a ways to go to close the pay gap and achieve more equitable representation -- and opportunity -- in the tech industry.

March is also the perfect month to host our first Women in Comms networking breakfast -- our seventh in the series, but our first as an independent non-profit. We will convene in Denver at the Cable Center on March 10 ahead of the Cable Next-Gen Technologies & Strategies conference.

I am thrilled to be moderating a powerhouse panel of four top females from across the comms and cable industry, including:

  • Patty Kummrow, Vice President, Platform Engineering Group, Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC)

  • Marnie Miron, Director, Strategic Partnerships, Rogers Communications Inc. (Toronto: RCI)

  • Cynthia Carpenter, Vice President, Product Management, Business Services, Charter Communications Inc.

  • Lisa Miller, SVP, Wholesale, Indirect, Inside & Content Sales Channels, Level 3 Communications Inc. (NYSE: LVLT)

Register to attend Women in Comms: Building Your Brand on March 10 in Denver right here!

I am also particularly excited about the topic of this month's panel: building your brand. So much of the greater women in comms issues -- recruiting more women, advancing at work, changing company culture, etc. -- seem to be large, institutional challenges that will take time and full industry buy-in to accomplish. But there's also a lot that we, as women, can start to do today to help ensure we are always "the best person for the job" and that we're making that known and helping ourselves however we can.

This panel discussion will focus on what it means to build your own personal brand, advocate for yourself, make yourself invaluable to the company outside of just your core job description and always keep advancing. We'll hear advice from our speakers who have carved this path in their careers, as well as leave plenty of time for your questions. (See Building Your Brand and 30 Tips to Build Your Personal Brand.)

I hope you'll join us in Denver (and stay for Cable Next-Gen at a discount!) for this inspiring morning. Let's make some of history of our own this month.

Director, Women in Comms

Sarah Thomas's love affair with communications began in 2003 when she bought her first cellphone, a pink RAZR, which she duly "bedazzled" with the help of superglue and her dad.

She joined the editorial staff at Light Reading in 2010 and has been covering mobile technologies ever since. Sarah got her start covering telecom in 2007 at Telephony, later Connected Planet, may it rest in peace. Her non-telecom work experience includes a brief foray into public relations at Fleishman-Hillard (her cussin' upset the clients) and a hodge-podge of internships, including spells at Ingram's (Kansas City's business magazine), American Spa magazine (where she was Chief Hot-Tub Correspondent), and the tweens' quiz bible, QuizFest, in NYC.

As Editorial Operations Director, a role she took on in January 2015, Sarah is responsible for the day-to-day management of the non-news content elements on Light Reading.

Sarah received her Bachelor's in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She lives in Chicago with her 3DTV, her iPad and a drawer full of smartphone cords.

Away from the world of telecom journalism, Sarah likes to dabble in monster truck racing, becoming part of Team Bigfoot in 2009.
