AUSTIN, Texas -- SXSW -- Once a year, the worlds of film, music and interactive media come together in the Texas state capital to talk tech, showcase up-and-coming talent, drink lots of beer and eat lots of tacos.

Okay, there's more to it than that -- in fact, no matter what your interest is, there is likely a South by Southwest session perfect for you. It's ten days of top-notch speakers, great discussions and a lot of fun mixed in.

For us SXSW newbies at Women in Comms, what impressed us first was the sheer number of women in attendance, but also by the amount of great content around the myriad issues of being a woman in the tech industry. Enlightened discussions took place on how to shake up "bro culture," why women exit the industry, how companies like Pinterest are tackling change and much more. Of course, we also took time to observe all the weird and wonderful things that Austin has to offer during its annual time to shine. While we didn't make it into a number of the popular panels (sadly, including the Game of Thrones one or the Veep cast appearance) due to the outrageously long lines to get in, we still saw some action worth sharing.

@Sarah Welcome to the Lone Star State! I've often wondered how KC folks felt about Texas BBQ :) I look forward to your future coverage of Austin technology. I hear a lot of interesting things come out of Capital Factory.

I didn't get any this week, although I live here now, so am keen to try Franklin's BBQ. Just don't want to wait 7 hours in line for it! I'm from KC; I'm hard to impress with BBQ...

Tents are going up all over the city now, which means the music festival component of SXSW is ready to get in full swing. I'm sure there will be a lot more weirdness and waiting to see this weekend. This is definitely a very cool, unique event. I'll report back!
