Now more than ever, the industry needs to come together to ask and answer the big questions facing the communications networking industry -- and that's going to happen at the upcoming Big Telecom Event (BTE) in Chicago.

Making Sense of It All at BTE

Blink and you'll miss something big.

That's how I feel about the communications networking and services sector right now -- the pace of change is so rapid. For example, here's just a small flavor of some of the industry-changing developments that have taken place during the past three days alone:

That's almost insane. That's the kind of M&A activity you might expect in a month or a quarter.

And it's not just the pace -- the complexity can be bewildering, especially when it comes to the introduction of cloud and virtualization technologies and the impact that will have on network and business strategies. For example, consider how the networking strategies being developed and implemented by web services giants such as Facebook are going to impact the networking market the world over and how such an influential company can impact the broader market:

That's why I'm looking forward to setting up my virtual office in Chicago during the week of June 8 and getting a much clearer picture of where this market is going during the Big Telecom Event and the many workshops that are happening before and during the event.

That's because I know I -- along with the thousands of others heading to Chicago -- will get a real-world view of the impact of SDN, NFV and the cloud from key executives such as Axel Clauberg, Vice President, Aggregation, Transport, IP and Fixed Access at Deutsche Telekom AG; Andre Fuetsch, Senior Vice President, Architecture and Design, AT&T; Jared Wray, CTO, CenturyLink Cloud; Bikash Koley, Principal Architect & Manager, Network Architecture, Google; Nico Fischbach, Director of Strategy, Architecture and Innovation, Colt; and many more.

Add to that the other keynote presentations, panel sessions, workshops and show floor demonstrations that will delve into OTT service delivery, network security, IoT, new business strategies, next-gen Ethernet, 4G evolution, data center interconnect… the list goes on. There's a lot to learn about -- a lot to understand.

Light Reading's second Big Telecom Event takes place on June 9-10 in Chicago. Get yourself registered today or get left behind!

It's already going to be a great event, but it can be made even better by you. Yes, YOU! That's because everyone can gain from everyone else's insights, experiences and views. BTE is a fantastic place to tap into what the experts are saying and showing off but also to provide feedback to those experts and to the others in Chicago, whether that's on the show floor, in the interactive panel sessions, at the Leading Lights Awards Dinner or during the Battle of the Bands that's taking place on the evening of the first full day of the show. You might have to shout a bit to be heard, though.

So, yes, there's fun to be had too. And it'll be more interesting if you can join us there. Check out all the details at the BTE website and see the very long list of industry executives who are going to help us all get to grips with the future.

I hope to see you there.
