Hats off to Buckeye CableSystem. Beating nearly every major North American MSO to the punch, the mid-sized Ohio cable operator is rolling out a bandwidth-on-demand service that lets broadband subscribers try out faster data speeds. Buckeye, which serves about 130,000 cable customers in the Toledo area, is also letting cable modem subscribers move up to higher speeds temporarily for specific applications. For example, customers could use a "turbo button" on their computer screens to boost speeds for quicker downloads of music and video or faster uploads of photos. Camiant is aiding the deployment by supplying its QBUS policy server and bandwidth-on-demand application manager. Buckeye is relying on PacketCable Multimedia (PCMM) architecture to support switching among its four data tiers. Buckeye CTO Joe Jensen said the MSO also aims to offer SIP-based phone services and other IMS-based (IP Multimedia Subsystem) applications. The Buckeye deployment is the first one announced by Camiant, which has also been linked with Comcast.
