Cincinnati Bell Preps for 1-Gig

Opening up yet another front in the US Gigabit Cities wars, Cincinnati Bell has unveiled plans to launch 1-Gig service in the greater Cincinnati area early next month.

Cincinnati Bell Inc. (NYSE: CBB) announced earlier this week that it will introduce Gigabit service in the Ohio city on September 8. Branding the product as "Fioptics Gigabit," the company boasted that it will offer top download speeds up to 20 times faster than the top download speeds now offered by MSO rival Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) in the Cincinnati market. TW Cable, which has announced plans to boost its maximum broadband download speeds to 300 Mbit/s in a number of other major US markets, now offers top downstream speeds of 50 Mbit/s in Cincinnati. (See TWC: Maxxing Out Too Late?)

Cincinnati Bell did not disclose where it will roll out its new 1Gbit/s service first. Nor did it reveal its pricing plans for the new Fioptics service. But it apparently intends to offer the 1-Gig product as both a standalone service and a bundled service with its Fioptics TV service.

The rollout is part of Cincinnati Bell's greater "Light Up Cincinnati" initiative. Under this program, the telco has already started offering 1-Gig service to small businesses in its service footprint.

That program also calls for Cincinnati Bell to offer free WiFi hotspots in "key locations" throughout the city and in conjunction with community events. For instance, the company plans to offer several WiFi hotspots during the city's upcoming Labor Day weekend fireworks celebration.
