AT&T's Austin GigaPower Debuts at 300 Mbit/s

AT&T has gone live with its "GigaPower" service in Austin, Texas, but won't actually offer gigabit downloads until the middle of next year.

AT&T launched the service Tuesday offering initial download speeds of 300 Mbit/s for a monthly Internet contract. AT&T plans to expand GigaPower "beyond parts of Austin neighborhoods like French Place, Mueller, Zilker and Onion Creek" in 2014. (See AT&T 1-Gig Fiber Live This Week in Austin.)

Austin residents can vote for the fiber service in their neighborhood here.

AT&T says it will offer customers that sign up for the initial 300Mbit/s service now a free upgrade to gigabit speed when that arrives. The operator is offering three packages initially: Internet for $70 a month; Internet and TV for $120; and Internet/TV/Voice for $150 a month.

Google has said it will offer a 1Gbit/s service in Austin by mid-2014 too. So the battle between the operators in 2014 will likely involve how many neighborhoods they can serve with the faster service. (See Austin Gets Google's Next Fiber Gig.)

Re: Grabbing a page from the LTE playbook?
Guess it depends on whethr they follow the cable shared bandwidth model, Carol. Has AT&T said anything about this yet, Dan?

Re: Grabbing a page from the LTE playbook?
I'm still waiting to see how residential customers make use of a gig of bandwidth - and is it really a gig or does everyone's gig share a 10-gig feeder link, in which case 300 Meg may be all anyone gets during busy hours.

Re: Grabbing a page from the LTE playbook?
Well they do *say* upfront its 300 Mbit/s now and a free upgrade next year.

That still might be way better than what local residents can get now in those neighborhoods.

But will they fool anyone with this? It seems so transparent. Maybe they should've waited till they could actually offer 1 Gig speeds next year.

Yeah, I get why they did it, I guess "BitaPower" just didn't have the same ring as a brand name.

Re: Grabbing a page from the LTE playbook?
I think AT&T had to do that because they were in a big hurry to compete with Google, even if just from a PR perspective.

Grabbing a page from the LTE playbook?
This "fiberhood" concept reminds me of the way operators have been launching 4G with limited coverage in towns and cities and then going back and filling in the gaps.
