Another day, another acquisition in the enterprise WLAN space. This time, it's WiFi controller vendor Bluesocket Inc., which is getting deeper into the wireless VOIP space with the acquisition of Pingtel Corp. for an undisclosed sum.
Pingtel is a developer of Linux-based PBXs and related software. The buyout will help springboard Bluesocket further into the enterprise convergence arena, according to CEO Mads Lillelund.
"It is positioning Bluesocket for the converged environment that is beginning to emerge," Lillelund tells Unstrung.
He says Bluesocket will develop new hardware and software with Pingtel's technology. Bluesocket has already started to move away from its roots as a WiFi controller company with a "refreshed" product line that includes one of the first enterprise access points to be based on the technology that underpins the new 802.11n WLAN standard.
"We're shipping MIMO today," Lillelund says. (See Conventions: The MIMO Frontier?)
But, even as the market evolves, the rivals don't seem to change much. "In 80 percent of our deals we see Cisco and Aruba up in the same space," says Lillelund.
