BT FONs in WiFi Hotspots

October 04, 2007 | Dan Jones |

11:45 AM -- BT Group plc has bought its way into the FON WiFi network, taking an undisclosed stake in the hotspot upstart.

The deal is predicated on allowing users to share. BT has three million broadband customers. Those with WiFi who agree to share a small portion of their home broadband connection will get access to more than 190,000 FON hotspots worldwide.

But will people share? The growth of FON suggests that the idea is appealing to some. But I do wonder whether -- as BT claims -- this WiFi network could cover the entire U.K.
