Sony Mobile's MWC Debut

1:00 PM -- Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications is newly single as part owner Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) completed sale of its stake to Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE), which in turn renamed the mobile division Sony Mobile, on Thursday. (See Ericsson Completes Handset Stake Sale.)

The divorce is timed well with Mobile World Congress, where Sony has a press conference scheduled on the Sunday before. The press invite, however, only says to come see "what's new and what's next."

LR Mobile will be at the event, and I'm hoping the new company comes out with a bang. The last few times I've met with Sony Ericsson, they've shown off their gaming-centric smartphone -- or at least that's the only thing that I can remember. Sure, gaming is sort of their thing, but it's for a niche market at best and not one that will help them compete against much more well-entrenched players like Samsung Corp. (See Sony Ericsson Intros Devices at CES.)

Sony Mobile has the opportunity to more tightly integrate its smartphone business with the rest of product lines and to make a unique mark on Android. It's not too early for it to start that process.

Check back to our MWC show site for coverage of the press conference and the rest of the mobile extravaganza in Spain.
