Good deal. Reaching Craig Matsutmoto is easy.

I just have to go get my shoes shined at that place near the Palo Alto Fry's and tip the guy $20 while asking, "Can you explain the infield fly rule?" The shoeshine guy nods to a guy, who nods to another guy, who says something into his shirtsleeve and then a black sedan appears and takes me to Craig's office.

Phil,

I would be happy to introduce you to the proper contacts at HHI.

Matsumoto knows how to reach me.

thanks sail,

Yes, the adaptive encoding sounds like the secret sauce (and the part that allows the quality to keep from overwhelming the network). I'll check into it. Seems like something we should cover.

Where I think this gets exciting is when the soccer Moms & high school football Dads start broadcasting to Facebook (or whatever replaces it) LIVE from an event. In short bursts it could just be a nominal charge that includes data backup. Who knows? Seems the carriers are sitting on a goldmine here.

Fairly sure HHI uses a combination of off the shelf and a few parts built in their labs.  They started doing this a few years ago when there was really few off the shelf parts available.  what is neat is the adaptive encoder and that they do it from a moving vehicle.

Cool. Are they using something off the shelf or something built by a camera maker?

Also, Shank and I were sort of speculating, but I wonder if anyone is charging for a data burst as a service itself or do they just have a plan-per-device as most one-off applications have now?

Nice demo.

Note: HHI in Berlin has been streaming full motion HD 1080p over their LTE network for some time.  Bi-directional.  They also use an adaptive encoder that adjusts the video stream for highest possible QOS even as the quality of the RF signal changes due to urban interference with the signal.
