Comcast Web TV Trial: 10,000 Being ServedOctober 27, 2009 | Jeff Baumgartner

no ratings 2:00 PM -- DENVER -- CTAM Summit -- Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) intends to launch its broadband-fueled On Demand Online (ODOL) service in all systems by the end of this year, but it appears as if the initial tech trial that the MSO is using to vet out a new "authentication" system is adding a few hundred customers every few days. (See Comcast Nears 'TV Everywhere' Launch.) The trial got underway with 5,000 customers. A Comcast blog posting last week indicated that the number had recently been pushed to 7,000. During today's general session, Comcast EVP and CTO said 10,000 subs are up on the trial now. A Comcast spokeswoman confirmed that the average length of viewing for a video in the ODOL trial has been about 21 minutes. Werner also noted that Comcast's content delivery network (CDN) is outfitted to provide about 20,000 video-on-demand (VoD) titles... something to think about if you've been following that war of words going on between Comcast and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) regarding which service provider offers the most VoD choices today. And this is really just the beginning, anyway. SeaChange International Inc. (Nasdaq: SEAC), which works with both Comcast and Verizon, just fleshed out its CDN strategy for MSOs and telcos. SeaChange VP Alan Hoff told Cable Digital News last week that the vendor's new CDN platform is already set up to handle 150,000 VoD assets. Although that offers "a good rest stop" in terms of pure video tonnage, "we're thinking in terms of millions of assets," he said.
