4:00 AM -- It's time to get down to brass tacks on Light Reading's 2012 Leading Lights mobile product finalists.
The products enabling better mobile and 4G services and driving demand for those services are really what caught our eye for this category this year. So, you'll see some of the usual suspects below, but some different choices too. (You can see the full list of finalists here; free registration required.)
The Leading Lights Awards and Light Reading Hall of Fame winners will be revealed on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Manhattan Penthouse.
Here are the six finalists for Best New Product (Mobile).
Apple's iPhone 5
If sales figures alone counted, the Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 5 would be winning all the mobile awards that could be flung at it. Apple shifted 5 million of its latest smartphone in the first weekend of sales.
Numbers aside, though, the iPhone 5 is a significant update on Apple's touchscreen icon. The phone is the first from Apple to feature faster 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) data connectivity as well as a bigger screen and faster dual-core A6 processor.
Dialogic's PowerMedia Extended Media Server (XMS)
Dialogic Corp. (Nasdaq: DLGC)'s PowerMedia XMS aims to combat one of the biggest perceived threats to operator revenues these days: over-the-top (OTT) services that just treat the costly radio network and hard-won spectrum like a big dumb conduit. The server aims to allow operators to deploy sexy OTT-like multimedia services while retaining the benefits of quality-of-service and all that good stuff.
