Broadband wireless vendor BeamReach Networks appears to have shut up shop following a bundle of VC funding and a high-profile trial with Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ).

Several sources have confirmed to Unstrung that the Sunnyvale, Calif., startup has bitten the dust. The vendor’s Website is no longer active, and a number of the company’s original management are now beginning to emerge elsewhere.

BeamReach’s CEO and CFO, David L. Robertson, was last week announced as the new VP and CFO of billing and mediation startup Narus Inc. (see Narus Names New CFO).

In September Bernard Aboussouan, VP of marketing and business development at BeamReach, was appointed to the same position at WiMax chipset startup Sequans Communications (see Sequans Appoints Marketing VP).

According to a recent Unstrung Insider report, BeamReach raised a total of $63 million from Goldman Sachs & Co., London Pacific Life & Annuity Co., Mitsui & Co. Ltd., Sofinnova Ventures Inc., U.S. Venture Partners, and Walden International Investment Group (see BeamReach Raises $15M).

The startup was founded in 2000 by some of the team that worked on the Project Angel system for AT&T Wireless, one of the first Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based, non-line-of-sight, 3.5GHz systems on the market.

Early excitement surrounding BeamReach focused on the vendor’s proprietary "beamforming" antenna technology and signal-processing techniques. BeamReach claimed its designers had massively improved the performance of broadband wireless kit across dimensions such as range, throughput, power, signal propagation, and so on.

The company got off to a successful start following a $4.2 million contract in Malaysia and a trial with U.S. carrier Verizon, but appears to have later struggled against competing OFDM vendors and the might of 802.16 market stalwart Intel Corp.
