ORCA Project helps app developers access network value

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- ATIS today announced launch of the ORCA Project, which stands for Open Real-Time Communications APIs, to enhance solutions for reliably delivering content to any device by leveraging core network services. As its first major deliverable, ORCA has successfully developed client-side software called orca.js, with the “.js” denoting creation of a JavaScript library. An open source project serving the needs of the web development community, orca.js masks the complexity of end-to-end signaling for real-time communication, allowing developers to focus on adding innovative new functionality to their applications, such as high-quality voice and/or video calls. The software specifically provides a consistent signaling API to allow developers to access the robust services provided by IMS networks.

“ORCA will help service providers to leverage their IMS investment by exposing the value of an increasingly powerful network to developers,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan M. Miller. “It also addresses developers’ need to simplify and speed applications development.”

Until now, developers who wanted to add real-time communications to web applications had to implement their own signaling mechanism, or adapt their product to use the unique APIs for each service provider. The orca.js software offers a “one-stop” vendor-neutral solution for consistently and easily accessing network services through a single communications API. Through shielding applications from rapidly changing WebRTC specs, ORCA allows developers to focus on their app’s unique functionality.
