Mobile Asia Expo: Highlights

11:00 AM -- Wireless service developments, the impact of OTT, the potential of Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) and the ongoing growth of mobile broadband have been among the dominant topics at the GSM Association (GSMA) 's inaugural Mobile Asia Expo 2012 event in Shanghai this week.

The event has included a conference covering all manner of mobile topics (devices, applications, service strategies), an expo with about 170 exhibitors and about 20,000 attendees.

Our man on the scene has been Robert Clark (normally to be found in Hong Kong), a regular contributing editor to Light Reading who reported on the OTT issue Wednesday. (See Telcos Voice Their OTT Anxiety .)

In other news from the show:

  • ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063; Hong Kong: 0763) launched what it claims is the industry’s first LTE BeamHop Solution, which enables operators to use existing 2G and 3G antennas for 4G services too. The vendor showed off the new capability using its LTE A8808 Active Antenna System (AAS).

  • Customer experience management (CEM) specialist The Now Factory announced a deal with operator Hong Kong CSL Ltd. , which will use the Irish firm's Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT) system to help manage its mobile data services. (See CSL Deploys The Now Factory's CEM.)

  • The GSMA issued a news release stating that "the business impact from the growth of connected devices in China will increase six fold from US$116 billion in 2012 to US$707 billion in 2020." To find out more about what that means, check out the full release.
