Analyzing a Busy Week for Microsoft

Welcome to Research Rewind, a weekly recap of published telecom research and blogs from Pyramid Research and Heavy Reading.

This week we're focusing on Windows Phone vs. Android, Microsoft's net-nets from buying Skype, mobile social networks in AME, the U.S. Ethernet Over Wavelength market, the Packet-Optical Transport Evolution conference next week, connected TVs and the Making Money on Mobile Broadband conference in June. It's all this week in an especially newsworthy edition of Research Rewind.

  • This week the tech media was buzzing about Pyramid's Q1 Smartphone Forecast, which concluded that Windows Phone would lead all comers, including Android, in market share as early as 2013. Senior Analyst Stela Bokun wrote a spirited defense of this prediction, "Why Windows Phone Will Beat Android," that showed the depth of analysis that goes into each of Pyramid's forecasts. Read her post and then make your comments on our Facebook page.

  • Not to be outdone, Pyramid Senior Analyst Jose Magana weighed in on Microsoft's decision to buy Skype. His Pyramid Point, "Skype Gives Microsoft a Much Stronger Voice," was picked up by various media outlets. Read his post and then make your comments on our Facebook page.

  • In other Pyramid news, we published our report on mobile social networks in Africa and the Middle East. "Mobile Social Networks Get Profit Potential from Youth Movement" looks at the growth of mobile social networks and why youth and young adults are presenting opportunities for operators, handset manufacturers and others keen to cash in on this trend.

  • Heavy Reading published a new research report, "The U.S. Ethernet Over Wavelength Market, 2011-2015," which analyzes and projects the growth of this crucial and rapidly growing service combination over the five-year forecast period.

  • In the run-up to Light Reading's annual Packet-Optical Transport Evolution (POTE) conference, taking place on May 18, 2011, in New York City, Heavy Reading Senior Analyst Sterling Perrin blogged about what's hot in packet-optical transport.

  • Last week I mentioned Heavy Reading's new Insider, "Connected TVs Will Help Drive Big Changes in Video Services." This week Heavy Reading analyst Danny Dicks blogs about the state of play in connected TVs and the potential fallout for IPTV providers. See his post.

  • Finally, just a reminder that there's still time to register for the upcoming Making Money on Mobile Broadband conference in Brazil in June. For more details, see Pyramid Research Senior Analyst Vinicius Caetano's new Pyramid Point, "Brazil Goes Louco for Mobile Broadband." Comment on our Facebook page here.

That's Research Rewind for this week. Until next Friday, we'll see you online at Pyramid Research and Heavy Reading. May the telecom be with you!
