CHICAGO -- Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq: HLIT) today announced that Aliant (TSE: AIT), a leading information and communications technology provider in Atlantic Canada, has upgraded its digital headend with Harmonic's DiviCom MV 100 encoding platform and NMX Digital Service Manager. The Harmonic-based infrastructure enables Aliant to expand its video-over-DSL service, which is currently being trialled with customers, while optimising picture quality and facilitating future expansion with advanced compression technologies.

With its new DiviCom MV 100 based digital compression facility, Aliant plans to launch a comprehensive TV solution in the coming weeks. The MV 100 encoders, initially configured with MPEG-2 and software options for advanced compression technologies such as MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) and SMPTE VC-1, make it possible for Aliant to deliver more simultaneous video streams over a single DSL connection in addition to high-speed Internet access and telephony services. The native IP output of the MV 100 ensures a seamless integration into Aliant's IP service environment and provides for future expansion.

"Aliant is building on its existing strengths in areas of telephony, IP, wireless and Internet technology by introducing an advanced IP-television service. This expansion enables us to accelerate the development and delivery of IP-based applications to our customers," said Gary Lund, Chief Technology Officer at Aliant. "Our television service and the new Harmonic-based digital broadcast centre are key to our long-term strategy of consistently offering greater choice and value, strengthening our position as the provider of choice for communication, information and entertainment services. Following an extensive technology assessment, we confirmed that Harmonic's DiviCom MV 100 provides the best available MPEG-2 compression rates along with high picture quality across various types of content. We are impressed with what Harmonic has done to improve MPEG-2 and are confident that Harmonic will likewise lead in the emerging world of advanced compression technologies such as H.264 and VC-1."
