Euronews: New Year Relief for Alcatel-Lucent

January 04, 2013 | Ray Le Maistre |

Alcatel-Lucent, Telekom Austria AG, Hutchison 3G Austria GmbH and TeliaSonera AB close out the week's regional roundups.

  • Upgrades from financial analysts have given Alcatel-Lucent's share price an early year boost, though its stock is still only commanding a price of $1.46 on the New York Stock Exchange (up by 5 percent since the turn of the year) and €1.17 on the Paris exchange (up nearly 16 percent so far this year). For more on the upgrades, see this report and this analysis. The vendor recently arranged new credit facilities, a move that improved confidence in the company's future.

  • The Austrian mobile market is a little more settled today after the completion of two acquisitions. Telekom Austria has finally completed its €390 million ($507 million) takeover of budget brand YESSS! Telekommunikation GmbH, while Hutchison 3G Austria has sealed the €1.3 billion ($1.7 billion) acquisition of Orange Austria.

  • Former TeliaSonera veteran Thomas Haug will be awarded the Draper Prize by The American National Academy of Engineering for his role in the development of NMT, the mobile technology that spawned GSM. In all, five mobile technology pioneers, including Light Reading Hall of Fame inductee Martin Cooper, will receive the prize this year. For more, see this press release.
